All volunteers receive 8 days of induction training. Our training is accredited (optional) with Open College Network qualification. We also provide regular Support Sessions/Training on a variety of topics such as: Play Skills, Mental Health Training, Safeguarding training, Employment and Work Experience and Goal Setting.

We consistently get very positive feedback on the quality of our training from attendees – and this is in turn reflected in the support the volunteers are able to offer to the families.
Once volunteers have successfully completed the training and have the required safeguarding checks and references, they are ready to be placed with a family. They will then visit a family once a week for 3 to 4 hours, usually for as long as help is required. We ask volunteer to commit to HSC for at least 12 months because of the investment we make in their training and supervision. Some volunteers support more than one family and many go on to support other families in subsequent years.
You can listen to two of our volunteers discussing their experience volunteering and supporting families here:
Are you a parent or do you have a parenting experience?
Would you like to enhance your skills to offer friendship and support to families with young children? Can you spend 3-4 hours weekly, to visit a family with young children who may be going through a difficult time?
